CONGLETON Town have landed their dream semi-final tie against FC United after extra-time success on Saturday.

While The Bears were beating Padiham 3-2 in their League Cup quarter-final FC United swept past Silsden 3-0.

The semi-final draw has earned Congleton a lucrative match with the side they wanted to meet.

The Bears' victory at Booth Street was watched by a crowd of 147, compared with the 1,564 spectators at Silsden.

The two-legged semi-final matches will be played on dates to be fixed.

The Bears' quarter-final victory was their seventh in a row, and manager Andy Lee named leading scorer Gerard Courtney and Jordan Johnson in his starting 11.

The pair have turned down approaches from other clubs, and Allan Glover returned on Saturday at left-back.

The goals' drama occurred at the end of the 90 minutes and in extra-time. Congleton broke the deadlock 16 minutes from the end of normal time.

A period of concerted build-up play eventually brought the reward the Bears had been desperately seeking.

Padiham conceded a corner, from which Jones found himself unmarked, and made no mistake, heading the ball back across goal and beyond the keeper's despairing dive.

Bailey and Baker could have extended the Bears' lead within three minutes of the restart, but saw their shots blocked.

Morrison headed just over for Padiham, and Smith for Congleton hit the bar with a shot from the edge of the box.

The visitors took the match into extra-time with a goal on 83 minutes. A long ball was picked up by Paynter, whose shot appeared to have ballooned out of play.

Fildes was on hand to collect the ball and cross to Paynter, who headed back across goal for Morrison to knock it in.

Padiham came close to winning the match in normal time when a chip shot from Paynter from the edge of the box beat keeper Forester and clipped the top of the bar.

Congleton took what appeared to be a decisive lead with two goals in six minutes.

Udall sent in a low cross on 94 minutes which Courtney chipped past the Padiham keeper from eight yards out.

Six minutes later it was 3-1, Andy Alston rising to glance a header from a free kick past the keeper.

Padiham pulled a goal back at the end of the first period of extra-time, Barrett lobbing keeper Forester from the edge of the box.
