Warrington Wolves' new signing wants his side to make it easier for themselves

REINING in a little of the fancy ball work is the way forward this week, says Trent Waterhouse.

The Australian international back rower, set to make his home debut against London Broncos on Sunday, felt Wolves were a little too adventurous for the first game of the year at Hull.

“We didn’t make it easy on ourselves,” said Waterhouse, a former NRL Grand Final winner with Penrith Panthers.

“There were a lot of errors coming out of our own end, so we kept letting them off the hook after making some early inroads.

“Hull are a pretty good side and they made us pay. We were probably lucky to get away with a draw in the end.

“It’s credit to the boys, though, for hanging in there and giving ourselves a chance. The goal kick could have even won it for us.

“But a point is a point and we’ll take that, particularly after looking down the barrel of a loss.

“We were a little bit rusty and probably tried to play a bit too fancy for this time of year.

“I think we should just pull the play back a notch to make inroads. We’ve got to make teams pay and not let them off the hook.

“But there were good signs in the performance.

“We made a lot of breaks and tested them a fair bit.

“It’s a good stepping stone and we’ve got to improve for the game against London, who were pretty solid against St Helens on Saturday.

“Now I can’t wait to play in front of the home fans at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, with it’s new renovations.

“I watched a few games on TV in Australia last year and I could tell there’s a great atmosphere at the ground.”

Waterhouse is enjoying being around his new teammates and likes the style of football.

And he agreed that Simon Grix is the squad member to be catching the eye early doors.

“He’s probably been the stand-out player in the games against South Sydney and Hull,” he said.

“He’s got a lot of class and is playing out of his skin.

“Simon held the ball up beautifully for the break I made for Rhys Williams’ try.

“He’s going to have a massive year.”
