TONY Smith has flipped the coin on thoughts that facing Hull FC in the opening game of the season may be the best time to play them.
With a new director of football in Shaun McRae, a new coach in Peter Gentle and seven major signings, the KC Stadium outfit could well be still trying to find their feet in the opening games of the campaign.
Smith said: “I’m not sure that it will be a good time to play them. Only time will tell on that one.
“I’m sure they’ll be trying to prove some points to a new coach, so you can flip the coin on the other side.
“I think they’ll be a competitive team, as they have been for the last few seasons.
“We’ll give them the utmost respect and go over there to try and do a job like in any other game.”
Former St Helens, Gateshead, Hull and Salford boss McRae chose Gentle at the helm in place of Richard Agar, who is now the head coach at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Gentle was assistant coach of Wests Tigers and number two to Tim Sheens with the Australia national team.
Hull have seven new signings in their ranks, including full back Wade McKinnon who has followed Gentle from Wests Tigers.
Also on board are centre Tony Martin from Crusaders, half back Brett Seymour from New Zealand Warriors, prop Andy Lynch from Bradford Bulls, hooker Aaron Heremaia from New Zealand Warriors, scrum half Jamie Ellis from Leigh Centurions and loose forward Martin Aspinwall from Castleford Tigers.
