CUP GLORY: Grandad Ernie sees Monaghan lift the cup

MICHAEL Monaghan is delighted that his grandfather’s first trip to England was marked with a record-breaking back-to-back Wembley win.

Ernie Monaghan had to apply for a passport to see his grandson compete against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday. It was the first time he had ever left his home town in New South Wales, Australia.

The 84-year-old flew to England alongside Michael’s father Stewart and he became a minor celebrity after watching his grandson lift the cup for the second time.

“He is a bit of a rock star at the moment, he’s doing interviews left, right and centre,” said Michael.

“To come such a long way and to see us perform like that was pretty special.

“I’m sure he’ll be going back to Oz with some stories to tell.”

Michael made history after becoming only the third Australian to win the famous Lance Todd Trophy last year, but was happier to return to Warrington this year having secured Wolves’ place in the history books.

He said: “It was great. To win one trophy was special but to win back-to-back cements us as a very good team.

“I’m really proud that we did it.”
