Warrington Wolves prop picks up his third Challenge Cup medal

FOR Wolves prop Garreth Carvell winning the Challenge Cup is like an annual reunion with an old friend.

He has appeared in four of the last six finals, picking up an impressive hat-trick of winners’ medals.

“It was a great performance and to beat Leeds, who were regarded as favourites, is a great achievement,” he said.

“I’ve been to Wembley the last three years. I’m lucky enough to have three winners’ medals and hopefully we can make it a fourth next year.”

Carvell won his first Challenge Cup medal with Hull FC in 2005, narrowly beating Leeds in Cardiff.

But there was a danger that he would not make it to this year’s final after the 30-year-old broke his leg in a Super League game against Hull KR .

“When I had the screws in my leg I didn’t know if I’d make it back to the pitch this year but I pushed myself, trained hard, kept motivated and was back within nine weeks.

“It was probably a little bit early but the game time has done me good.”

His medals all have sentimental value for the Yorkshireman, who was born and lives in Leeds, but the last two will always hold a special place in this heart after he shared the experience with old friend Adrian Morley, who was best man at his wedding.

He said: “I love playing with Moz. It was fantastic to be out there with your best mate. I will never forget it.”
