TONY Smith has explained the reasoning behind Chris Bridge starting on the substitutes’ bench against St Helens on Friday night.
Bridge had previously started each game he was fit for this season at right centre.
In the few hours prior to kick off, speculation mounted that Bridge would be taking no part in the game at all but he was influential in a more central role in the second half.
Smith said: “He’d had a disruptive week.
“He couldn’t train early in the week with an injury and then he had sickness as well.
“He only had one training sessions with us this week so he started on the bench.”
There were tactical benefits too as Bridge took up a half-back role when he joined the action.
Smith added: “I thought he’d speed the game up for us when he came on and take advantage.
“I thought that our opponents were tiring as the game went on and I thought he could really take advantage of that – and he did.
“He added some impact which we were looking for but we needed a little bit more at times.
“We didn’t take advantage of a few other situations that we created.”
