Defeat against St Helens will improve Warrington Wolves, says Tony Smith

TONY Smith says his Warrington Wolves team will benefit from their defeat at St Helens in the long run.

He was satisfied with the effort his players produced in the 28-18 defeat at Knowsley Road on Friday night but felt the errors produced in the heavy rain cost his team dearly.

“I thought we dominated many facets of that game,” he said.

“Errors cost us. They took advantage of a few errors that we coughed up and really capitalised on it, which St Helens can do.

“But I thought physically and also probably field-position wise I thought we dominated.

“I was very pleased with the efforts that my players put in. I’m not too disappointed.

“We need to learn how to cope when some errors are made but that’s what those weather conditions can bring you – you need to be squeaky clean in all areas.

“We’ve learned some lessons but if my team puts in that sort of effort every week we’ll finish at the ‘pointy’ end of the competition, I’m sure of that.”

He felt incidents like the high kick dropped by Richie Mathers and the knock on by Richie Myler, leading to St Helens’ two second-half tries, were partly related to the conditions.

He added: “You pay a heavy price some days on that – some days you get away with it.

“We’ll learn from it.

“The players were all disappointed in the dressing room. I asked them if they were proud of their efforts – the effort that they physically put in – and they are so I can’t ask too much more for that.

“But there are lessons that we are going to learn throughout this season to make us better and stronger and bring us together as a team.

“And Friday night will be one of those games that will help us and improve us.

“There’s a lot of positives to take out of it.”
