MANY fans will find it hard to single out a player who deserved special credit in the aftermath of Wolves’ obliteration of Harlequins yesterday.
It was an inspiring performance across the team, perhaps overshadowed by the five-try haul of winger Chris Riley, but Wolves boss Tony Smith has heaped praise upon his front row.
“All of our front rowers were outstanding, Carvell was terrific, Woody was throwing offloads, making breaks and throwing dummies, it was great for all three,” he said.
Smith also wanted to highlight the remarkable contribution of his captain, the indominable Adrian Morley, whose powerhouse showing was even more incredible when you consider that he had slept for only an hour the night before.
Despite becoming a father for the second time in the early hours of Sunday morning, Morley was still willing to perform and Smith had no doubt that the 32-year-old prop would give his all for the team.
He said: “Mozza had one hour of sleep since the night before last, Clare gave birth at six o’clock this morning and Moz has been doing all the right things fatherly.
“But there was no risk in playing him, I knew he’d be up for it and he played well.”
Wolves gave the 11,678 strong crowd - a record for a Wolves home game against Harlequins - a scintillating attacking and defensive display, the result of many hours of hard work on the training pitch.
But without the staff and facilities of Birchwood High School, Smith believes that Wolves may not have performed as well as they did.
“We are really grateful to Birchwood High School as we’ve been struggling to get on pitches because of frost, wet or snow and they have saved us with their 3G pitch,” he said.
“I wholeheartedly mean it because without it we would have struggled with our skill levels.
“They have been our saviours.”
