VINNIE Anderson is breathing a sigh of relief about the 2010 campaign wiith Warrington Wolves.
That is because he will get the chance to line up alongside his old international teammate David Solomona rather than play against him.
Tony Smith has brought the former Kiwi international forward to Wolves from Bradford on a 12-month contract and Anderson believes Warrington have recruited wisely, despite some fans’ concerns of the 31-year-old’s recent injury record.
Solomona’s 2009 season ended in April after dislocating his shoulder against St Helens, just three games into his comeback from a previous dislocation.
But the former Wakefield star, who played under Smith’s brother Brian at Parramatta Eels, has undeniable quality and experience, having made 125 Super League appearances.
Anderson, who last played alongside Solomona in New Zealand’s 2006 Test against Great Britain at St Helens, said: “Sometimes you just go through bad runs with injury and it can happen to anyone.
“He’s been training and kept training since the season ended because he wanted to come to Warrington in good shape.
“He’ll continue to make sure he’s doing all that he can to get back to full fitness and our medical and coaching staff will make sure he’s doing all that he can as well.
“He’s a very dangerous player and I’m sure we’ll use him a lot next year.
“Everyone knows how skilfull a player he is and how damaging he can be with the ball.
“He’s a fantastic player who is going to be good for the team and one that I’m glad to be playing with instead of against.”
Anderson has had his own shoulder issues and had surgery at the end of the season.
But he expects to be back in full training in December to prepare for what he hopes will be a more consistent season for Wolves.
Anderson scored the killer try as Wolves defeated Huddersfield Giants to lift the Challenge Cup in August and he agrees with Tony Smiith’s end-of-2009 pitch announcement that the team will be chasing league and cup glory next term “Absolutely. It’s got to be your goal at the start of the year and we’ve got the team to do it,” he said.
“We’ve proven that we can perform on the biggest stage and we just need to be more consistent throughout the year and put ourselves in the picture at the end of the Super League season.
“I think the consistency is gained on the training pitch - training hard and being tough on ourselves.
“The consistency will come. Winning is a habit and as we start to win it will get easier and easier.”
