Duo handed Crewe Alexandra chance

TRIALLIST Hamdi Razak will get a chance to force his way into Gudjohn Thordarson’s plans.

New strikers are well down on the priority list as the Alex boss intends to spend limited funds bolstering the defence and midfield.

But the 23-year-old did enough in the final half-hour against Newcastle Town to extend his stay at Reaseheath.

“He scored two goals and was close to a hat-trick,” explained Thordarson.

“He has played in the lower league in France and then went to Swindon last season where I had good reports on him.

“He’ll train with us for the next few days and I will assess it after that.

“I want him to show that real desire and hard work on the training ground.

“The priority is still defenders and a central midfielder.

“I haven’t been looking to strengthen my strikers because we have a lot here already but if a player with quality because available then it is something we have to look at.”

Long-serving Swindon midfielder Michael Pook joined Razak on trial and also figured in Crewe’s 7-0 win at the weekend.

Despite joining Cheltenham on a similar basis, the 23-year-old could return.

“Michael will have a trial with Cheltenham,” added Thordarson.

“That is fine and we knew about it.

“I thought he did well for us in the friendly game and if he wants to come back then we are more than willing to assess the situation with him.”

Thordarson also confirmed talks with two experienced players although money could be a factor.

Refusing to name them but revealing they are aged 27 and 25, he says they need to come for the right reasons.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of players and I have told them what we can offer,” continued Thordarson.

“I won’t budge because I am working on behalf of the club and the board.

“I’ve said to the player that if it is money then they can go elsewhere.

“I do not have a problem with that.

“I’ve told them coming to Crewe would be a good platform for them.

“They have that little bit more experience which will be good for us.”

Controversial midfielder Michael O’Connor finally joined the Alex exodus after agreeing to a three-year contract with Championship side Scunthorpe.

The deal could rise up to £225,000 on certain criteria while a substantial sell-on clause has also been inserted.

Crewe will continue their pre-season preparations at the Carden Park golf and leisure complex before facing Wigan at the Alexandra Stadium next Thursday (July 16).

Billy Jones has been named new club captain with Anthony Elding serving as his deputy.
