Brian Carney scores first try in Warrington Wolves colours

BRIAN Carney scored his first try in Warrington colours as Wolves Reserves thumped Celtic 62-30.

Starting on the left wing, Carney capitalised on a break from centre Alex Hurst to score early in the second half at Maesteg RFC.

It was only the Great Britain international’s second appearance for the reserves, with head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith unconvinced he is ready to make his first-grade bow just yet.

But he showed some good signs in a convincing win and may begin to put the pressure on for a Super League spot in the coming weeks.

Wolves hit the front early on, hooker Alex Thompson going over after five minutes and Hurst scoring straight from the restart to establish a 12-0 lead, Craig Harvey kicking the two goals.

After a near miss for Crusaders, Adam Neal and Yaad Johal both touched down, Harvey converting one, to stretch the lead.

Nigel Scott capitalised on good work from Tyrone McCarthy to score before Celtic got their first try of the game on 26 minutes, Lewis Mills the scorer.

Wolves’ response was swift, McCarthy scoring and Harvey adding the extras but tries from Ashley Bateman and Jamie Murphy cut the gap to 34-18 at the break.

But the impressive Hurst went to work once more after half time, setting up Scott and Carney in quick succession, Harvey booting both conversions.

Harvey touched down and Matty Lomax scored from a Matty Blythe offload before Murphy responded for the hosts to leave Warrington 56-24 ahead.

Wolves reached the 60-point mark when Thompson flopped over from close range, Harvey converting.

But Crusaders had the final say when Lee Williams stepped through a gap to score.
