Celtic Crusaders doing pretty well says Warrington Wolves boss

TONY Smith believes Celtic Crusaders are doing ‘pretty well’ in the time that they have had.

The Bridgend boys are in their first season of Super League after just years in existence in the National League ladder.

Celtic are bottom of the Super League table, though, with only two wins so far.

Was the decision to give them a Super League licence the right one?

“I was all for the expansion. I think it’s good that we take our sport to other places,” said Wolves’ boss, who also wears a national cap in his role as England coach.

“I like to give those areas time to prepare though.

“My only beef isn’t about them being appointed, it’s probably when they were to be introduced.

“I would have liked to have seen them introduced next year knowing that they were going to be introduced from the point they were told – that would have given them 18 months to prepare.

“I think it would have made it easier for them to get a stronger squad together. Just like the Gold Coast have in Australia and it’s proven to be the right thing there.

“And just like the Catalans had. They were introduced to Super League 18 months before they actually kicked off.

“It gave them a chance to get ready and get prepared. I would have liked to see that happen for Celtic as well.

“They’ve done pretty well considering that, and in the short period of time they’ve been in existence as well.”
