Mitchel-King can’t wait to get started

NEW recruit Mat Mitchel-King admits it was the boss who made joining Crewe a no-brainer.

The 25-year-old hailed Gudjohn Thordarson’s no-nonsense approach as a key factor in making the switch from non-league Histon.

But the towering defender also highlighted the club’s glorious heritage for bringing through stars of the future.

Whether that philosophy transcends into this new era remains to be seen.

Quickly reunited with fellow signing Patrick Ada, Mitchel-King can’t wait to get started.

“I spoke to a few clubs and a few managers,” he explained.

“But as soon as I went to Crewe and met with Gudjohn and Steve (Davis), I had a good feeling about the place.

“Looking around the training ground, the stadium and meeting the people just sold it to me.

“They are my kind of people and coming up to Crewe was the best feeling I had.

“I just felt right and I know Crewe’s reputation for developing players and all the work Dario Gradi has done for the club.

“They don’t hide from the fact that they are a selling club and a platform to go on and better yourself.

“You only have to recall the names that have come through.

“If you do well at Crewe then you get noticed.

“Hopefully later down the line I can do that but my main objective is to do with Crewe and the manager who had faith in me.”

Here on a free, the former captain of Histon is keen to repay Thordarson for making the deal happen.

“When I met with Gudjohn you could tell he was a no-nonsense kind of guy and I like that,” added Mitchel-King.

“He is a man’s man.

“I don’t just want the small talk and told what I’m doing right.

“If I’m doing something right then great but if I’m not then it is better to get it out in the open.

“Gudjohn is that kind of man and I can relate to that because I have a job to do for him and the club.

“I’m aware of what he wants and I’m sure they are a great bunch of lads here.

“I just can’t wait to get started and get these pre-season matches underway.”

Having enjoyed two successful years together at the Blue Square Premier outfit, Ada believes Mitchel-King is a key signing.

“I have played alongside him for two years at Histon and he is a strong player and leader,” he said.

“He will be looking to take this chance and prove himself.

“I am sure we are both capable of making that step up into the league.”
