Warrington's World Cup heroes - Albert Naughton
8:50am Wednesday 29th October 2008 in By Mike Parsons, Sports Editor
ALLY Naughton, a great Warrington Wolves clubman, appeared in two Great Britain games during the inaugural 1954 World Cup.
He was in the centre in the final, with clubmate Gerry Helme at scrum half, as GB defeated France 16-12 in front of more than 30,000 fans in Paris.
Naughton, who scored 167 tries in 348 appearances for Warrington between 1949 and 1961, also figured against the French in the second game of the tournament, helping Britain secure a 13-13 draw in Toulouse.
Naughton, who went to become landlord of the Britannia pub in Warrington town centre, joined Warrington from Widnes in 1949 and also represented England and Lancashire during his Wilderspool days.
With Warrington he played against Widnes in the 1950 Challenge Cup Final win at Wembley and the club's last Championship Final success against Oldham in 1955.
He also appeared in the Lancashire Cup Final defeat of St Helens at Wigan in 1959.
