THE hi-tech design of the new Navigation Primary School in Altrincham has earned regional recognition.

Construction company McGoff and Byrne scooped two coveted prizes on successive days for its work on the £4.25m project.

It gained the best practice award at the North West Regional Construction Awards, which recognise the excellence of key projects.

And it followed this up with the sustainability prize at the RICS North West Awards.

Known as the property Oscars', these awards reward innovative schemes and developments from across the region.

Last year the Hawarden Road school's eco-friendly features gained it another accolade, a Green Apple award - a gold' standard that recognises initiatives to improve the environment.

The new school replaced its dilapidated Edwardian predecessor in 2006.

McGoff and Byrne transformed the site into an impressive school campus.

which comprises two main linked buildings.

There are 12 classrooms, IT room, food technology room and music room - complete with interactive whiteboards - that are linked by wide corridors with lights which constantly change colour to create a 'calming effect' for the 360 children and staff.

The building's innovative design finishes include large vents along the roof with a cardinals hats' shape which allow fresh air into the classrooms to control temperatures.

Great lengths were taken to ensure the new hall offered multiple uses, including a timber sprung floor, high level windows with electric operated blinds for blackout effect for performances and acoustic panels linking the upper walls to allow the space to be used as an auditorium.

The whole building is naturally ventilated and designed with high profile energy saving measures, such as a wind turbine that re-uses rain water saved on the roof. It was designed by architects Ansell and Bailey.

James McGoff, managing director at McGoff and Byrne, said: "We are thrilled to have been presented with these two prestigious construction awards for Navigation Road Primary School.

"It is a fantastic achievement for the company and clearly demonstrates our commitment to quality construction, superior design, sustainability and innovation."
