POLICE are urging locals to be cautious if considering buying a mini-moto for their child following a spate of anti-social behaviour on the machines across the borough.

Officers are reminding parents that the bikes must have road tax, insurance and an MOT if they are to be used on the road and users face prosecution if they are caught riding them illegally.

A police spokesman said: "In short, ride an unlicensed and uninsured mini-bike out of your garden gate and you're breaking the law.

"The misuse of mini-bikes is creating a negative image of motorcycling and having a detrimental effect on responsible, committed riders.

"Parents and owners may themselves be liable for offences if they permit anyone, including children, to use mini-bikes illegally."

The bikes are only to be used on private property with permission from the landowner and people found breaking the law face having the bike seized and crushed as well as being fined or slapped with an ASBO.

Middlewich has been plagued with youngsters riding the bikes illegally down Brooks Lane and on Maidenhills.
