A CENTURY of excellent education was marked by a truly historical day for staff and students from the past and present of a Middlewich school.

Middlewich High School celebrated its 100 years on Wednesday with a whole host of dignitaries and former members of the school community, while current pupils and staff took part in a wide variety of centenary activities and lessons.

Headteacher Martin Forster said: "What attracted me to Middlewich High School was the strong tradition of being part of the local community - we couldn't let the school's 100th birthday go without a celebration.

"There has been 100 years of excellent education on this site and we aim to build on this and meet the challenges of the future."

Building of the school, in King Edward Street, began in January 1906 and it was officially opened on November 1 that year.

But the construction work still continues 100 years on - a new ICT suite was opened in January this year, while a block providing space for food technology, autistic provision, a classroom and reprographics room is currently under construction.

Throughout the celebration day pupils joined in with a variety of anniversary themed lessons, including working on a centenary mural in the art department, trying out recipes from 1906 in catering and being taught maths in an Edwardian style.

Congleton Borough Mayor Clr Andrew Barratt had some words of advice for the school's current pupils at the celebrations.

He said: "You've got such a lovely school and you should take advantage of it.

"Don't waste your time here - make the most of it.

"I hope the school goes from strength to strength, especially when the new buildings and projects come to fruition."
