STAFFORDSHIRE Police made drugs dealers and organised crime groups pay during a record year for asset recovery.

During the year to March the force's financial investigators recovered £3.24 million from offenders, more than double the 2007 total of £1.4 million.

Over the last 12 months a north Staffordshire drug smuggling gang was given confiscation orders totalling almost £1.2 million.

Members of the gang were jailed for a total of 40 years for their role in a cannabis importation ring.
