A MAN was viciously beaten in an unprovoked attack in Middlewich town centre on Friday night.
The father-of-one, who did not wish to be named for fear of reprisals, has been left with a black eye and swollen head after being smashed in the head with a bottle and punched repeatedly in the face by a drunken thug.
Miraculously no bones were broken, but his wife said he could have been killed.
"He never normally goes out in Middlewich because there's always trouble," she said.
"I just think it's disgusting that you can't go out for a drink at night, I mean he could have been killed.
"He won't go out in Middlewich again now, that's it."
The 29-year-old victim was enjoying a night out in the Cat's Bar in Wheelock Street when his attacker threw a bottle at his head.
His head instantly swelled up and after reporting the incident to bouncers he left the pub to go home at around 2am, but was followed by his attacker.
The 6ft tall gentle giant' stopped to talk to a friend outside St Michael's Church in Hightown when three men ran over and one punched him several times in the face.
The victim's wife believes that because her husband had not retaliated to the bottle throwing incident the thug had come back for more.
"He didn't retaliate so they followed him," she said.
"He just said it happened so quickly and it took him by surprise.
"I just hope that the police will do something and press charges because they can't just let people run around the town doing things like this or we will end up with someone being killed."
The victim was taken home by a friend and went to the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich the next day before being transferred to Leighton Hospital for x-rays.
The couple now want justice for the attackers.
"We want to press charges," added the victim's wife.
"It just can't go on like this in the town, it was only a couple of years since that lad was killed.
"Middlewich is getting worse because these type of people are allowed to run around and create havoc in the town."
At the time the Guardian went to press no one had been arrested in connection with the attack.
Anyone with information should call the CAT team on 0845 4586382.
