PLANS to build a diversion route through a Warrington park have been officially thrown out this week.

Councillors sitting on the executive board of Warrington Borough Council threw out the scheme for the A50 Long Lane diversion at a meeting of the executive board on Monday night.

The proposal was dumped because of the redevelopment planned for Orford Park, which the road would have gone through.

An Orford vicar has welcomed the decision saying it ends a threat to Orford Park.

The Rev Steve Parish, vicar of St Ann's Church, said: "It's a road that was turned down at two public inquiries in the past, largely because it would destroy Orford Park and we had 900 signatures this time on a petition opposing any road across the park.

"Introducing a lorry ban on Long Lane has eased problems there, and this was a road that would do little to help congestion. I'm grateful to local councillors Kate and Mike Hannon and Terry Whelan for their support in this."
