Town's Peacocks store to close

Town's Peacocks store to close Town's Peacocks store to close

FASHION shop Peacocks, based in Bridge Street, has closed.

The chain was taken over by Edinburgh Woollen Mill today, Wednesday.

But they confirmed the Warrington store was one of more than 200 to close nationally.

Administrators have also now confirmed the store in Birchwood Mall has been closed and will not relocate.

Hundreds of stores will stay open but the announcement means 3,100 people will lost their jobs.

John Gorle, Usdaw National Officer said: “While this is obviously fantastic news for those workers whose jobs have been saved, it is absolutely catastrophic news for the 3,100 people now facing the dole queue and this remains one of the worst redundancy situations of recent years with Scotland being particularly hard hit.

“Usdaw will be seeking a meeting with Edinburgh Woollen Mill as soon as possible to discuss its plans for the business.”

That street is going to be completely derelict soon. Something has to be done!! And not just charity shops. Whatever happened to the great plans to make it bars and restaurants etc??

The sad fact is that people generally drive into town more than they did 15+ years ago. There is little need to visit Bridge Street during the day. Hence developing Winwick Road Albans Retail Park.

Well maybe I'm old fashioned but I still enjoy my Saturday shopping trips with my Mum. I can't imagine spending 3-4 hours a day at Alban Retail Park I'm afraid. That's a get-in-get-what-you-
want-get-out sort of place.

The good news is while it is true that the council is ignoring its own strategy to build more out of town stores and finally turn Bridge Street into a post apocalyptic wasteland, they've applied for an £83,000 grant to buy some promotional boards to put over the derelict shops to try to convince everybody that none of it is actually happening.

WRONG....... They will spend the money on another sculpture "to try and attract more visitors to the town!"

Maybe they could spend it on another investigation to work out who thought that they should develop a local development plan which includes protecting the town centre, then ripping it up on the say so of a planning department which already has a very colourful track record. Perhaps they need the police to start looking at bank accounts after all.

And if Primark would have gone into the old Boots store it would have brought a whole new market to Peacocks Warrington, then perhaps it would have been a better performing store. It's time WBC offered a real 'incentive' to potential renters to take these places on and not simply listened to the complaints of the Golden Sq residents that it will "affect their business".

What is the matter with Warrington that Primark have not opened a store here. Does the council not want it, surely it could offer incentives, other towns do. Widnes is attracting new business & has not got the population that Warrington has. How many more big shops are going to be empty before something is done.

rumour has it Primark cannot be located in town centre due to conditions imposed by Debenhams when they agreed to be anchor tennants of the newly refurbished Golden Square

Widnes is attracting new business because there was nothing there before. Widnes haven't got anything to offer that you can't get in Warrington.

Peoples fascination with Primark baffles me.
