The Queen to visit town for diamond jubilee

HM The Queen HM The Queen

THE Queen will visit Warrington on her tour of the UK as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

She will be in the borough in May in a tour of north west towns on May 16 and 17.

It is understood she could be involved in the opening of the new Orford Park project.

Council leader Clr Terry O’Neill said: “We are thrilled that Warrington has been selected as one of the destinations for HM The Queen to visit during her Diamond Jubilee year.

"We have a strong tradition as a town of putting on a wonderful display for our VIP visitors and I’m sure that we will pull out all the stops to ensure that Her Majesty receives the very warmest welcome in 2012.

"It is a real honour that we will be able to showcase some of the things that make Warrington great, and to do that as part of the Jubilee celebrations.”

Move to a different town then. I'd like to think we do make the effort to pick up all the litter and tidy the place up a bit when the Queen comes to visit.

If you know you’re having visitors I’d have thought it’s quite normal to have a bit of a tidy up? We may have no money but that’s not to say we shouldn’t make an effort.

Elizabeth Windsor is a representative of an an institution that has no place in a modern democracy.

If you believe in the divine right of succession then she should have only been on the throne since 1972 - when her uncle , Edward VIII died.

(Wonder if they'll include the Cromwell statue on the tour around the town. :-) Yes, I know, Cromwell was just as much a monarch as she is - perhaps more so)

I can understand the need for some localized house keeping and painting stones white (army fashion) when HM comes to town. Whether royalist or republican manners maketh the man/woman/child. But I cannot understand £170,000 approx. being spent to spruce things up fleetingly for when the Olympic flame passes through the borough. Especially when 190 front line staff are to be made redundant, whilst leaving most of the dispensible and plainly dysfuntional higher tiers of management untouched.

On the contrary Nick.... seems to work pretty well to me.

The sovereign is a figurehead and does a fantastic job of representing UK interests around the world and even an ardent republican should be able to admit to the ££++ benefit the country sees in keeping the monarchy.

Frankly I think the modern monarchy is often misrepresented - most of the lesser royals cost us nothing and whilst the Queen is a wealthy person in her own right she still chooses (as a matter of duty) to fulfil a tough routine of public engagements and tours both in the UK and overseas. Remarkable at the age of 85 and a real inspiration.

Edward abdicated in favour of the queens father in1936. If you dont like the monarchy thats your problem not ours, We like her and respect all the hard work she has done and all the income she brings into this country.

If you didn't have the Queen you'd have a President as head of state. How does President Milliband sound? Personally I'd open a vein at the thought of that. Thank god we have her !

What an honor for the Queen to be paying a visit to Warrington. You should all be proud of your British history and of the wonderful job the Royal Family performs as goodwill ambassadors all over the world. Just look at the faces of the children and the crowd at Royal visits to see what an effect the Royal Family has. They are truly admired and loved. What price do you put on that? We, on the other side of the pond, have Obama.”

You don't have Orford, or Greggs or Jeremy Kyle either.

Not everyone from Orford/Longford are "track-suited, Greggs-munching inhabitants".
Are you from Widnes by any chance??

what is the point of this antiquated system which dictates that some person should be lavished with riches , be above the law, be bowed at by all around and be thought of as better than everyone else simply for the mere fact that their ancestors inter bred.. there is no state purpose to uniting nations by regal marriage as unity is now declared by trade and commerce...

if we recover all the land owned by the aristocracy who lay claim to over £65 Billion worth of land £25 Billion the royals family alone, Buckingham palace worth £5Billion alone.. because they were "in the club" back in the day and us peasants were slaved to work for the landowners.

the queen alone gets an annual payment from our government of £13 Million but get this £28Million of our taxes as EXPENSES !!! "gawd bless her"and we mince over BANKERS £1million BONUSES !!! at least they work for it deserve it or not !!!

Prince charles gets £30 Million from one of his estates alone !!!
and we are told that he has his own income...well wheres my family estate stolen from people 1000s of years ago?
The Royal family own 200,000 peices of art if they viewed 50 of them a day it would take them ten years to see them all !!!

The estimated total annual cost of the monarchy to taxpayers is £202.4m

We call ourselves a democracy..but the queen can withold our right to vote by not dissolving Parliament...what is Britain but a bunch of slaves who **** but never stand up.

the jobs they do as ambassador?? are you serious, we can all go around shaking hands and nodding for that kind of money!!

if you want to bow to these scroungers on society then you do so, but I would rather bow to your chavs of longford who have struggled for their dole which aint close to these peoples DOLE !

You would be better at home in south korea richpoo, 87% of this population want the royal family, Only 6% dont and 7% abstained. So although I dont say your opinions dont matter I will say other peoples matter 87% more.

Do you mean North Korea - another country with an unelected, dynastic head of state?

Why should anyone leave their own country because they disagree with how its head of state is chosen? How ludicrous to suggest it. I am sure there are things you disagree with but still stay.

I never hear those who want to reduce EU influence being told to move to Switzerland.

When was this referendum held in which 87% voted to keep the monarchy? I am sure I would have noticed if there had been one.

The point I was making is that if you believe in the divine right of succession then the nazi-admiring Edward VIII would have not been forced out and Elizabeth Windsor would have only come to the throne on his death (he died in 1972)

It seems unlikely that an individual as Edward VIII would ever have achieved high office in a proper democracy - he would have been a much worse choice than a President Miliband or President Cameron for that matter

Either way, She would have been queen today, Much loved and respected by most. The poll that gives these figures was conducted in 2010. Switzerland is a lovely country I go often. The queen is here to stay, You will have to get used to it.

Aside from the ghettos (either side of Winwick road ), Her Majesty might be interested in taking in some of the Borough's other noteworthy sights; the removed roundabout on Winwick Road; the queue outside the benefits place on Mersey Street ( refuse to call it a Job Centre!); the McDonalds on Bridge Street or she could even be treated to a game of Bingo at that one near the CockHedge Centre!

She could have a go on our state-of-the-art Ice Rink in the CockHedge Centre if she's lucky! Or did that go bust already?

Top it all off with a stroll through the market with it's Pram-faced mothers shoving their grubby children round with Greggs-dummies in their mouths (pasty-fiers) and a bottle of cold, milky tea to keep them quiet.

She's in for a real treat.
