Dealing with climate change

GLOBAL warming is being tackled by Halton Council.

A new climate change strategy is to be drawn up, the executive board has recommended.

Cllr Phil Harris, nominated to champion the strategy, said a lot has already been achieved to make Halton more environmentally friendly.

"We have encouraged recycling but we need to do more," said Cllr Harris.

The council's fleet has 16 commercial vans that run on lower emissions while 10 refuse trucks will be replaced in January with vehicles that comply with more stringent emission regulations.

Research has started into the use of bio-diesel, a more environmentally friendly alternative to diesel.

The council's waste disposal strategy is being revised and greenways' are being developed to encourage residents to cycle instead of drive.

The new £50m Daresbury Park site meets new energy efficient standards and Sandymoor Community Centre has its own energy generation system.

Windows and boilers in council properties are being replaced with more energy efficient installations and solar panels have been installed on the roof of the municipal building, providing heating for hot water.
