Latchford man jailed for four years for setting up Facebook riot page

Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan

A MAN has been jailed for four years after setting up a Facebook page encouraging a riot in Warrington.

Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, aged 22, of Richmond Avenue, Latchford, was due to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court in September.

But Recorder of Chester Elgan Edwards jailed him today because of the seriousness of the crime.

He praised the swift actions of Cheshire Police and said he hoped the sentences would act as a deterrent to others.

Keenan, who referred to himself as Pezz on the Facebook page, was sentenced alongside Jordan Blackshaw from Northwich - who was also jailed for four years.

He admitted the offence of inciting public disorder.

Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson said: "If we cast our minds back just a few days to last week and recall the way in which technology was used to spread incitement and bring people together to commit acts of criminality it is easy to understand the four year sentences that were handed down in court today.

"In Cheshire, we quickly recognised the impact of the situation on our communities and the way in which social media was being used to promote and incite behaviour that would strike fear in to the hearts of our communities.

"From the offset Cheshire Constabulary adopted a robust policing approach using the information coming into the organisation to move quickly and effectively against any person whose behaviour was likely to encourage criminality.

"Officers took swift action against those people who have been using Facebook and other social media sites to incite disorder.

"The sentences passed down today recognise how technology can be abused to incite criminal activity and sends a strong message to potential troublemakers about the extent to which ordinary people value safety and order in their lives and their communities.

Anyone who seeks to undermine that will face the full force of the law.”

Martin McRobb, crown advocate for CPS Mersey-Cheshire said: “Jordan Blackshaw, 21 and Perry Sutcliffe, 22, independently and from the safety of their homes may have thought that it would be acceptable to set up a Facebook page to incite others to take part in disorders in Cheshire.

"They were wrong and were both sentenced today to four years’ imprisonment at Chester Crown Court, after pleading guilty to intentionally encouraging another to assist the commission of an indictable offence under sections 44 and 46 of the Serious Crime Act 2007.

“They both used Facebook to organise and orchestrate serious disorder at a time when such incidents were taking place in other parts of the country.

"Both defendants, in Northwich and Warrington respectively, sought to gain widespread support in order to replicate similar criminality.

"In investigating these cases, the Cheshire Constabulary acted very swiftly and effectively to close down these websites and to ensure that there was no actual participation in the planned events.

"Nevertheless, these posts caused significant panic and revulsion in local communities as rumours of anticipated violence spread.

“The Crown Prosecution Service worked very closely with the police and Cheshire Crown Court to bring forward preliminary hearing dates that had initially been listed on September 19.

"We were able to serve upon the defence in both cases sufficient case material that led to early guilty pleas and we were able to present the facts in both cases in a fair but robust manner.

“While the judge heard the two defendants were previously of good character, they admitted committing very serious offences that carry a maximum sentence of 10 years. The consequence of their actions could have led to more disorder and this was taken into account.”

the length of sentence is a bit silly. Theres nothing like a pathetic person doing something pathetic on a social networking site, but i'm used to reading about people being battered half dead and their assailent getting a community order. Very political sentence. But thats what you get when you vote them idiots in, ooops we didnt!!!!! anyway, i wont lose any sleep over this!!!!!! Hahaha!

That is complete crap. I don't agree with inciting riots, but to jail him for 4 YEARS!? He shouldn't receive ANY punishment at all since he didn't do anything!! He used his freedom of speech to tell others to riot, there's no proof he did any rioting himself. This kind of treatment of citizens is similar to what China would do and it's completely unacceptable.

I agree about the disproportionate size of the sentence when you consider that real crimes with real victims seem to often go under punished...

The biggest crime this man is guilty of is being a pillock.

Although the sentence may seem harsh, what he did had the potential to be explosive. The large amount of people who use facebook would have seen this, and then posted and there friends would have seen it and so on. Can you imagine, having your shop/home that you have worked hard for destroyed by mindless yobs? Look at the amount of people who were hurt or killed as a result of the riots elsewhere. He may be a pillock, but if the goverment dont send out a message, then it will continue.

4 years seems harsh, but even without appeal that means he'll be out in TWO, that seems about right to me, it was only through LUCK like minded idiots didn't take him up on his scheme. SicSac, freedom of speech would be to say "I support the actions of the rioters" which he would have basic rights to do so... organizing an assembly of thugs to cause havoc, harm, steal and damage which could lead to deaths is incitement to riot and has no connection with FOS. Its no different from planning a murder, intent is the crime. People go to jail for things they don't intend to do, eg death my reckless driving, no intent there but stupidity is not an excuse. incidentally my spamcheck words below are "foot-that" very apt rhyming slang.

Im happy with the sentence, though how effective a deterant it will be is debateable. Is prison the punishment it once was? I fear not. Food, is cooked on site in prison kitchens with fresh produce. Unlike most hospitals and OAP homes. Free membership to well equiped prison gyms is available to all, and is used by around 70% of our prison population. Free priviledges are far higher than those of our serving lads in Afghanistan. (Prisoners have more free phone calls home than lads on the front line) All prisoners have access to education and training packages. Oh and drugs are delivered to your door! (How that happens is beyond me, apart from yet more corrupt staff in positions of trust!) Is any one of these scallies actually going to be put to work cleaning up the mess they created? Tough sentencing maybe, tough punishment its not.

I can't believe what i'm reading! Never though the Guardian website was so full of lefties! Inciting a riot is a serious crime and the families of the 3 fellas who were killed in Birmingham just for protecting what they worked hard for or people burnt out of thier homes go London thanks to similar fools arranging looting would disagree the sentence was to harsh. Hopefully a situation of country wide thuggery will never happen but if it does and some little tit does a quick google search and these fools sentences comes up and it prevents him (or her, got to keep it PC for the lefties on here) sees this and it deters them than it's done it's job. Personally if i was to make an example of them i'd give them more than 40% of the time i could've given to them. It's very likely that many readers of the Guardians lives and business's could've been destroyed had it not been for the majority of good people reporting the idiots to the police and the web page closed down before the criminals woke up from a night of burgling and getting drunk or drugged up!

Shame on you all. Two young men did a stupid thing and fortunately no one was hurt as a result. And you are saying their lives should be ruined for it. Is this some fear reaction? I live in south London and had to face the riots that people in Warrington only had to fear - and I did not lose my humanity like this. Bottles flew over my head on their way to police vans but I did not want to ruin the lives of those people. Young people who do stupid things that don't end up hurting anyone should get a slap on the wrist and warned not to do it again. That is what most of you thought a few months ago and that is what most of you, I hope, will think in a few months time. What I see here is a mob mentality that will destroy the lives of people who just did something a bit stupid. You need to snap out of it. You need to remember your compassion, think as individuals again. You are better than this.

When we brits visit foreign countries we see their flags flying proudly. If we dared to ask them to take them down because they offend us, I'm sure we would find ourselves back on rhe next plane to Britain.
These pc nuts who come up with these ideas should be totally ignored and told to go away. These are people with too much time on their hands who get an idea in their head and twist it around and around in their minds till they convince themselves that somebody will be offended.

Cleopatra, I am not even remotely a liberal. Stop being hysterical about something that never happened, stop being so scared, stop whining like everything you love was about to be taken away. It wasn't. Grow a backbone. Get a grip.

There is nothing nice about what people do when they are in a mob. Nasty things happened during the riots. What I see in response is another mob. Frankly I don't think any of you have a leg to stand on. You're hypocrites - just as ready to destroy people's lives as the aggressive rioters.

Please stop.

I will leave you with a quote from a well-known liberal (or that's how you would describe him if he was posting here):

These sentences were given as being a part of the whole situation, not in isolation, because of the serious impact a riot could have had. It is time that people realised they must take responsibility for their actions and that their actions can have devastating consequences.. Incitement to rioting is not a joke, especially in the context of what else had been happening in other towns. Whether or not it actually happened is irrelevant and possibly these sentences will make people think twice before doing things like this again.

Jake, Frank, since when did these lads become victims? Incitement to cause a criminal act is a criminal offence. As it should be. Secondly, Jake, if your going to quote Our Lord, please use His quote as he intended. The "He who is without sin..." passage refers to the stoning of an adulteress. He then turned to her and stated "Go. And sin no more". And she did. Led a great sin free life for the rest of her days.

Sadly, when scallies get to the stage of prison sentences, theyve been given 100s of previous 'let offs', with the "Go and sin no more" speech. More often than not they respond with, "yeh course I wont. Promise. Thanks!". Lets hope prison gets the message through to them, as thats exactly what this punishment is intended for.

Well thats one less drug dealer in Latchford, he was notorious for selling crack, cocaine, and heroin. Good riddence to him, dealers like him ruin peoples lives selling that crap.

To add to what the post is actually about, he deserved every single day of that 4 year sentence he got, if the riot he tried to start had actually gone down then this town would have been ruined by it, nice friendly, family run buisness' would have probably been looted and burn't to the ground, and peoples livelyhoods would have been devestated by these mindless thugs, we dont need people like Perry in this town.

Warrington used to be a great place to live before this "chav" culture erupted, and if I'm bieng honest what I said at the start of this post further pushes me on to say he deserves to be in jail, we dont need his sort around here selling drugs and acting Jack the lad.

As a community we need to be tackling the rising problem of anti-social behaviour and drug dealing, we need to keep our streets clean from scum like that so our kids can go and play outside without bieng exposed to drugs and violence on a daily basis.

This logic tells me if I tell someone to murder someone I am not to blame.. ???. I dont think sic sac has got a grip on life.

I have seen this young man on numerous occasions walking about with his gangsta swagga like the big pathetic waste of tax payers money he is,
people like this serve one purpose in life and that is to cause as much trouble to innocent people, he will find his real purpose in life/jail (in the shower)
The justice system in this country is a joke I think 4 years is the right term for this kind of offence its an insult when someone only gets 7 years for murder.
Ps see you in 4 years sweet cheeks x

OF COURSE you're not to blame!! If you told someone to murder somebody else and they actually did it, why would you be the one in trouble? You didn't commit the crime so you should not be punished for it. If I tell people to smoke weed and they do should I be jailed for that too?
