A BY-ELECTION will take place in one of the tightest council wards in Warrington after a councillor resigned.

Clr Sharon Wilson (LD) has stepped down from her position in Poulton North, forcing the vote which will take place next month.

Labour's Graham Friend took one of the other seats in the ward from incumbant Lib Dem Colin Oliver earlier this year at the local elections in a very tight election. Mr Oliver will be favourite to be the Lib Dem candidate for this vote.

And it is likely to be a seat where the Lib Dems will be confident of holding, given their success at by-elections.

Another win for Labour - who were looking to target the seat in the next local elections in 2012 - and they will increase their already large majority at the Town Hall.

The vote will take place on July 28.
