A FIRE investigation has been launched after a blaze has completely destroyed a primary school's playhouse used to store outdoor equipment.
Crews were called to Oakwood Avenue Junior School, Oakwood Avenue at 2.10am this morning after flames spread from the wooden decking outside of the school to the main building.
Police have said they are treating the incident as suspicious and are appealing for any witnesses. The reception classroom has had its windows smashed and the frames are blackened and charred.
The inside of the classroom suffered smoke damage as well as books and computer equipment and more than £10,000 worth of bikes and other outdoor play equipment.
Pupils were due to start back at school on Monday but headteacher Gary Cunningham is awaiting a council report before a decision is made on the reception class.
He said: "We have to make sure things are right for the reception class.
"We don't know of anyone that has a grudge against the school.
"I hope someone out there is feeling very guilty."
