SIX-YEAR-OLD Matthew Watson may have been born and bred in Leeds but he wasn’t supporting the Rhinos at the Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley last weekend.
This is because his granddad, passionate Wolves fan Kenneth Green, aged 64, of Sandy Lane, made sure Matthew, who lives in Wharfedale, was a die-hard Wire from the word go.
Kenneth’s first memory of a cup final was when he was eight and his father took him to watch the replay at Odsal Stadium, in Bradford, when Wolves beat Halifax 8-4 and a crowd of about 102,000 turned out.
From 1959, when Kenneth’s family moved from Hatton to Stockton Heath, he never missed a home match at either Wilderspool or the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Since then he has made five trips to Wembley for his team – in 1974, 1975, 1990, 2009 and 2010.
Wife Kathleen said: “He is a fanatical supporter in the truest sense of the word, travelling by bus, train and taxi in the dark days when hardly anyone supported Warrington and there were certainly no arranged coaches to carry supporters.
“We have always had to organise family holidays around his rugby. Even our wedding had to be arranged to fit in with it!”
Kenneth encouraged daughters Joanna and Rachael to become fans and now Joanna’s son Matthew is the family’s youngest Wolves supporter, having watched matches at Warrington, Bradford, Widnes and, as of last weekend, Wembley.
