Three little peaks for fans of Harris

STAFF from Golden Gates Housing showed their adventurous side after scaling three of the UK’s highest mountains in freezing conditions for charity.
Fifteen employees at the Sankey Street organisation completed the Three Peaks Challenge, which involves driving 500 miles and tackling 1,344m high Ben Nevis, in Scotland, England’s Scafell Pike, which stands at 978m, and Mount Snowdon, in Wales, which is 1,085m high, within 24 hours.
They completed their gruelling mission with just two minutes to spare, netting £4,500 for Birchwood-based Brainwave, which is the Guardian’s charity of the year and helps youngsters with conditions such as cerebral palsy.
On one of their training sessions in Snowdon the team were lucky enough to meet TV star and artist Rolf Harris.
Clair Phillips, Golden Gates’ operations manager, said: “We put in six months of training to ensure we completed the challenge but we could not have picked a worse weekend for snow, howling winds and hail stones.
“This was a fantastic achievement by all the team as none of us had any climbing experience and because of the adverse weather conditions.”
It costs £3,500 to support a child through Brainwave for a year. Each youngster is assessed and an exercise programme is designed by the therapy team, according to their individual needs.
Parents and carers are shown how to do the programme at home, providing a framework so the child may reach their full potential. This might be the ability to crawl, walk or recognise numbers.
The families return every four to six months for the child to be reassessed and, if necessary, a new programme devised to help the child achieve the next goal. Once home, Brainwave have a number of family co-ordinators who are there to support and advise.
