A LONG-running campaign to improve road safety outside primary schools in Birchwood has paid off with the second of three planned crossings being built.

Birchwood Town Council has been calling for puffin crossings to be installed outside Birchwood CE, Gorse Covert and Locking Stumps primary schools for a number of years.

A crossing has already been installed outside Birchwood CE School on Admirals Road in the past few months.

Work has just begun on putting in a crossing outside Gorse Covert School on Gorse Covert Road and work is also now planned for Locking Stumps Primary School on Glover Road.

The work has been carried out after representatives from Birchwood Town Council held a special meeting with officials from Warrington Borough Council last year to call for the improvements.

The installation of the crossing at Gorse Covert began last week and is expected to take up to 10 weeks to complete.

Head teacher Lynne Joughin said: "We are really pleased about this as it is a bit of a safety issue.

"We started making inquiries about this two years ago as it is a very busy road."

Clr Chris Fitzsimmons, chairman of Birchwood Town Council, added: "We are delighted that this work is now being carried out and look forward to when all the crossings are installed."
