ring out for anniversary
THE bells of St Peter's Church in Newton rang out on Sunday afternoon in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The celebrations began at 2pm and the church's bells rang until 5pm, alongside bells throughout the country.
Judith Rogers, chairman of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers public relations committee, explained the importance of this nationwide event.
She said: "Bells were not rung during the war because they were to be rung out as a warning in the event of an invasion. It is therefore particularly significant that bells should mark this day of commemoration."
