CREWE'S Leighton Park housing estate is being given 'the bird'.
The borough council has won a legal battle to change the image of the area by renaming its streets.
A group of residents had their feathers ruffled at the plans to introduce the names of attractive birds to the maze of cul-de-sacs that make up the area. Fulmar Court, Flamingo Close, Sandpiper Close and Skylark Close were among the names chosen after meetings between the resident's committee and council officials.
Protesters appealed against the decision and took the council to court, claiming that the move was a waste of money. But South Cheshire Magistrates dismissed the residents' appeal.
The 14 areas on the estate have never been given names, being known collectively as Leighton Park with addresses pinpointed by numbers.
The complex has been suffering from bad publicity and the introduction of 'the birds' is part of a plan to improve its image.
