WHILE walking through Golden Square, I noticed a sign attached to a lamppost announcing a proposed 'development affecting the setting of a listed building' (The Barley Mow).

I am completely disgusted. The Barley Mow has earned its status as a listed building through withstanding 431 years in 'our' town. As such, why do Allied Domecq insist on trying to change such a wonderful building, of which the people of Warrington should be intensely proud. The Barley Mow, as a listed building, belongs to us and our future generations.

The town centre is constantly 'moving with the times' so why is one of the very few original buildings we have left being spoiled? I could understand if the aim was to strengthen the building, but it isn't.

I implore the people of Warrington to oppose this. DAVID WITHNALL, Poulton Crescent, Woolston
