Mark Bromilow, aged 17, and his friend were walking along the pedestrian path of Winwick Road on Saturday when Mark fell in front of an oncoming car.

Mark, of Fairbrother Crescent, Orford, had just started out in the family trade as a painter and decorator.

"He was a typical 17-year-old who lived life to the full. It's just very tragic," said his step-dad, Mr Michael Winstanley.

"From what we know, he was messing around with his friend, like lads his age do.

"I don't blame the driver in any way. It wasn't his fault."

He added: "There is a park and a leisure centre next to this road. I know kids mess about but they should leave the fooling about until they get on the park. I would hate any parent to go through what we have."

Michael, Mark's mum, Gina, and sister, Karen, have placed flowers at the scene of the accident.

The teenager is the second person to be killed on this stretch of the A49 this year. In January, an elderly woman died trying to make her way to the retail park.

Now, Mark's family wants the speed limit on this stretch of road brought in-line with the other parts of Winwick Road.

Vehicles can travel up to 70 mph where the accident happened, but across the island the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph.

Michael added: "No-one is to blame. It is just a tragic accident; but I do think the speed limit should be reduced."

Police were yesterday appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened on the south-bound carriageway at about 6pm.

The road was closed for more than four hours while traffic experts pieced together how the accident happened.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Warrington Police on 01925 652222.
