THE SKY'S the limit for a budding pilot after receiving a coveted RAF scholarship.

John Taylor, a 17-year-old student at Priestley College, beat off thousands of other applicants to receive one of the 70 scholarships available.

The award is presented by the RAF to people who want to be pilots. It entitles the person to an intensive 18 day course at a UK flying club of their choice.

John chose to go to Carlisle, in Cumbria.

He has now decided to become a fighter pilot after he leaves university.

"After taking this course I am definitely sure about my choice of career," he said.

"My first solo flight was a little bit nerve-wracking, especially the landing, but it was really exciting."
