Elderly test pilot health project

A PILOT project aimed at boosting preventative health services for Warrington's elderly people is to be launched later this year.

Council chiefs have welcomed the scheme, saying that it will play an important role in reducing the demand for hospital and long-term care.

Health, social services and housing agencies will be joining forces in the 18-month initiative, which will cost around £60,000 and will be based at sheltered housing schemes.

A health practitioner will work closely with other health professionals and sheltered housing wardens to provide as much health information as possible for elderly people.

This should then lead to earlier detection of diseases such as osteoporosis, arthritis, glaucoma and cataracts, and thus lessen the need for long-term care.

Clr George Syers, chairman of the borough's housing committee, said: "This is an exciting and innovative project which aims to help some of our most vulnerable older people.

"It should play an important part in reducing the demand for long-term care and therefore improving the quality of life.

"It further develops the excellent working relationship between the health service, social services and housing.

"This will be especially important in view of Warrington becoming a unitary authority next year with responsibility for both housing and social services."
