A SALESMAN is touting fire safety stickers which could be a menace to the children they aim to protect.

Fire chiefs have issued a warning about the brightly coloured discs, which depict a teddy bear dressed as a fireman and the plea 'Help!'

A door-to-door salesman, currently working the Birchwood and Padgate area, convinces parents the stickers are fire brigade approved and should be displayed in bedroom windows where children sleep.

He says that in the event of a fire, the stickers - which he sells for a £1 a time - will help firefighters locate youngsters more quickly.

But fire spokesman, Evan Morris says this is nonsense.

He said: "In firefighting, we have set procedures and a sticker in the window wouldn't necessarily mean we would go to that window first.

"We can't prioritise in that way. The main point of access and entry for rescue is the back or front door."

"But there is a concern from the pervert angle," he added. "On a hot night, when the windows are open, these stickers advertise a child is inside the room."
