AN ongoing campaign to see speed cut on a death-trap road in Penketh has finally triumphed.

Traffic travelling along the A562 Warrington Road will now have to slow down as the speed limit has at last been decreased from 40mph to 30mph.

Signs have been installed at each end of the road, which is a dual carriageway, to alert drivers entering the zone to the new limit.

The move follows years of campaigning by residents to introduce some kind of traffic calming measures along the dangerous highway.

Last year there was a fatal accident on the road, as well as an incident where a youngster was involved in a collision with a vehicle.

Commenting on the new measures, Penketh councillor David Keane said: "This is a real victory for the people of Penketh, and we can be confident of increased safety throughout the area.

"I will now turn to ensuring this safer speed limit is monitored and strongly enforced.

"I've made contact with the police with regard to flashing speed signs being installed, and cameras are something that we've campaigned for a long time and I am still waiting to get a response."

And although the community has welcomed the new speed limit, there are still concerns that it might not solve the problem of speeding motorists completely.

One motorist, who travels along Warrington Road twice daily, said: "It's all very well putting the speed limit down, but what they really need down there are cameras, otherwise there will be some drivers who will just ignore it."
