UNDERWATER search teams from Cheshire Police were attempting to recover the body of a woman from Latchford Locks as the Guardian Midweek went to press.
Police were alerted to the body's discovery by the lockmaster on the Manchester Ship Canal, at Latchford, at around 4.45pm yesterday, Monday.
He had been contacted by members of the public about the gruesome find.
Police divers faced a race against time as a tanker was due to use the locks, which would have washed the body away.
Insp John Ward said as the body had not been fully recovered, it was too early to say if there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death.
