WARRINGTON Wolves captain Lee Briers is set to face magistrates charged with drinking and driving in the wake of Saturday's away victory at London Broncos.

Briers is believed to have been detained in Liverpool Road, Great Sankey, after being dropped off on his return from the game.

He is thought to have given a roadside breath test and was taken to Warrington police station.

A Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed that a 24-year-old man from Rainhill, driving a BMW Z3, was arrested at around 1.20am on Sunday.

He was charged with driving with excess alcohol and was bailed to appear before Warrington magistrates tomorrow, Wednesday.

Club head coach Paul Cullen described the arrest as an "internal matter" and declined to comment further.

Earlier the stand-off was an inspirational leader, as Wolves recorded their best victory of the season at London Broncos.

He set up three tries and kicked five goals in a man of the match display on Saturday night.

Briers, who joined the club in 1997 from neighbours St Helens, took over the captain's armband from the departed Matt Rodwell last season, when he was Wolves' leading try scorer.

He enhanced his reputation as one of the best half backs in the game and was rewarded with a new three-year contract.
