A REWARD is being offered to catch thieves who snatched the roof from the Remembrance Room at Crewe Cemetery.

The borough council is offering a reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves who stole copper and lead from the roof.

The council's cabinet member for direct services Doug Butterill said: "This crime was particularly sickening.

"The expense of repairing the roof is bad enough. It is nothing, however, compared to the emotional cost to our visitors and the bereaved.

"Our thoughts are with those people who will undoubtedly suffer as a result of the destruction this theft has caused.

"A substantial reward will be offered to encourage people to share information with the police which will lead to the conviction of the persons who committed this callous crime."

The borough council has made special arrangements for people to view the Book of Remembrance on Mothering Sunday.

Cemetery and crematorium manager Mary Slinn said: "We understand that many people will wish to see the Book of Remembrance on Mother's Day.

"We have made arrangements for people to view the book in the office at the rear of the Crematorium on March 30, between 10am-12noon and 2pm-4pm.

"Priority has been given to replacing the roof at the cemetery and trying to resume normal services as soon as possible.

"While the work is being carried out the Book of Remembrance will continue to be displayed in the cemetery office and people are welcome to view it during office hours.

"Unfortunately visitors will be unable to access it on weekends and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Anyone with information about the theft should call police on 500222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
