PUBS and bars in Crewe and Nantwich will soon be a much safer place thanks to a training course specifically designed to minimise the effects of alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour.

The Crewe and Nantwich Safer Communities Partnership is injecting thousands of pounds to support and train local bar staff to improve their management skills while working in some of the busiest and most vulnerable pubs and clubs in the borough.

It comes in direct response to community concerns at the problems of drunkenness and disorderly behaviour, particularly amongst younger people in Crewe's town centre.

One of Crewe's most liveliest venues The Limelight club in Hightown, has welcomed the move after its staff have benefited from the training.

"It is in the best interests of licensees to ensure their staff are properly trained and equipped to deal with all the issues that surround alcohol misuse, especially amongst younger people," said club owner Ray Bispham.

"Limelight bar staff are already trained on a range of issues relating to the sale of alcohol, this course will undoubtedly build their confidence levels further."

Crewe Police's licensing enforcement officer, Paul Kotowski added: "Quality staff training can be time consuming and costly but licensees must balance that against maintaining order both on and in the vicinity of their premises."

Details of how to apply for one of the 100 places on the course, which is run in association with South Cheshire College, can be obtained from Bryan Dawes on 654654.
