The KNUTSFORD Guardian's appeal to raise £20,000 to help reopen a four-bed ward at the East Cheshire Hospice reached its target last week.
A cheque for £1,000 from Knutsford Round Table - plus £355 in donations - swelled the coffers to £20,400. "It is a tremendous effort by the Knutsford community," said hospice fundraiser Josie Hickson.
"This appeal created a greater public awareness of the importance of reopening the four beds.
"The realisation that loved ones cannot be admitted to the hospice at their time of need because of the closure is very real and the support is vital if we are to open the beds and sustain them."
It has taken the people of Knutsford and the surrounding villages 10 months to raise the much-needed cash to help reopen the ward at the Macclesfield-based centre, which cared for 21 Knutsford patients last year.
This week discussions were underway to determine when the beds might reopen but as yet no firm date has been set.
