'PROBLEM' kids weren't just learning firefighting skills in Widnes last week - they were learning how to respect themselves.

The Kool Down course was set up for Halton pupils in Years 10 and 11 who were having difficulty settling in schools.

It was a joint initiative between Halton Council and the local fire service.

Last Thursday saw an impressive practice drill followed by an end-of-course presentation ceremony.

Leading firefighter, Rob Turner, said: "The council were looking for ways to work with young people who were excluded from school or who were in danger of being excluded.

"We can be positive because we are disciplined in the way we work - and young people don't see us as a threat."

The 12-week course included practical problem solving exercises in Delamere Forest and 90ft high and low rope courses.

It also featured training with ladders and fire hoses and a trip to fire service headquarters in Winsford.

LFF Turner said: "They had to search a smoke filled room with masks on, which they found extremely exciting!

"The whole course was very practical and they took to it extremely well, we had nothing but positive feedback.

"There were some problems but they could deal with those issues in a safe environment - all the staff are very approachable."

Three of the pupils have now been put forward for courses on The Princes Trust.

"Over the 12 weeks they developed an understanding of other people," added LFF Turner.

"One or two of them would usually think in a self-centred way, but there was definite change. They became a good team."
