IN a tough group of the four best teams in the Huddersfield tournament, the Wids youngsters were unlucky not to lift the trophy.

In their first match versus Alnwick a decision by the referee to award Alnwick a try, which was clearly grounded by Batterton, robbed the Wids youngsters of a vital point.

The Wids put in a superb display against Preston with winger Taylor putting in bone crunching tackles to allow centre Lang to press the Preston line.

Cooke barged through to claim a hat trick as the Preston forwards were unable to control standoff Critchley and solid prop Coulter.

Fast running by hooker Parker allowed the Wids to dominate.

In the final match of the group against Newbury the Wids gave it their all, with Mercer and Duggan putting in huge tackles to prevent Newbury from sealing victory.

Scrumhalf Oliver jinked over to score against a side that had entered the competition with no team having scored a try against them all season.

Try scores and players: Cooke (3), Oliver (2), Critchley, Lang, Mercer, Duggan, Batterton, Simm, Taylor, Coulter, Parker.
