A CRACKDOWN on travelling criminals reaped rewards with arrests and more than 20 cars seized.

Police forces across the country joined up on Friday to clampdown on serious criminals, unsafe drivers and unsafe cars on the roads.

The initiative saw bobbies using automation number plate recognition equipment to pinpoint those breaking the law during the 24-hour crusade.

Insp Liz Cunningham said: “Criminals don’t adhere to boundaries so neither do we.

“About 80 per cent of criminals travel without insurance. At the moment within Cheshire we are seizing 120 cars a month for driving without insurance and driving licences.”

Police used the latest mobile fingerprint detection device, which helps them to identify a person within seconds.

More than 30 officers were working across the county, flooding areas with a high police presence.

Results from across Cheshire on Friday, revealed: l Two people were arrested at Burtonwood Services for being in possession of an offensive weapon and possession of drugs following vehicle checks l Twenty-six cars were seized l 14 cars were searched Insp Cunningham said: “We will work with colleagues closely and will share intelligence.

“Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, was arrested for a traffic offence. If a person or a vehicle doesn’t look right we can look into it.

“I can understand that people may think the offences are minor or lower grade but they can lead on to other things.”

She said the national drive was not just for a day and checks would continue throughout the year.

Cloned cars and drivers’ carrying more than their legal weight limit were among those who were flagged up.

Bobbies targeted hotspots including the town’s main routes and set up cameras to catch criminals.
