Fury as Lib Dems fail to object to Daresbury dance festival

A COUNCILLOR has slammed the Liberal Democrats for using ‘weasel words’ after the party failed to object to the Creamfields festival.

Clr Paul Kennedy (CON – Hatton, Stretton and Walton) said a letter from five of the party’s councillors to the Warrington Guardian opposing the two-day dance event’s plans for a three-year licence was simply ‘kidology’ after they failed to object to Halton Borough Council.

He said: “It is no wonder politicians are in disrepute. When I say I am going to do something I do it.

“The Liberal Democrats could have turned up to the hearing at Runcorn Town Hall but they didn’t.

“You have got to put yourself out if you are genuinely trying to do something, even if it is a lost cause.

“Residents seek action, not weasel words.”

The letter, published in February, was addressed from borough councillors Clr Brian Axcell and Clr Judith Walker and called for the dance festival to be moved to a new location to prevent residents being inconvenienced again.

It claimed Appleton residents have been afflicted each year that Creamfields has taken place.

Clr Kennedy said the councillors could have made a representation to the regulatory committee at Halton Borough Council despite living outside of the Daresbury boundries.

He said he lives in Appleton but made a representation to the committee.

“If they were genuine they could have made a representation or spoken at the hearing.

“Writing a letter into the paper will have no effect on the licensing, it does nothing. It is kidology.

“Creamfields is here for three more years, not just for elections.” he said.

Clr Brian Axcell (LD – Appleton) said: “As an individual living this side of Appleton, I live too far away and as a borough councillor I don’t have any right to object.”

Eager to throw out the proposals, Appleton Parish Council, of which Clr Axcell is a member, made a representation to Warrington Borough Council after being informed that it was not a consultee.

The parish council asked the council to make a representation to Halton objecting to the three-year licence but the council chose not to challenge the permanent licence.

Clr Axcell added: “We objected using the only avenue available as we were informed.

“The information turned out not to be correct.”

It's a two day event that happens once a year. How pathetic and whingy does this politician sound?? Get a grip you loser, there's far more pressing issues affecting town than the peace and tranquility of the Appleton toffs being breached for a couple of days a year, I'm sure the poor darlings can cope..

Get a life mate, all politicians are as bad as each other. Politics is dead in this country. Nobody trusts any of you any more and this 'story' just shows Paul Kennedy to be the vote grabbing attention whore that every politician strives to be.

But what of course is far worse are those people who so lack the courage of their convctions that they can only make comments under a pseudonym.

Well if you want your personal details splashed all over the internet then that's your look out.

Some of us approach internet anonymity with a little more caution.

However, if you wish to believe that I somehow lack courage then you go for it big man.

I have no problems speaking up to people face to face. However, this is not a face to face medium now is it.

Very good, so email Miranda Newey at the Warrington Guardian and she will set up a meeting for the two of us at her office. I'm up for it, I rather think that you won't be.

I am not badly affected by Creamfields although I can certainly hear it from here (I'm not in Appleton by the way). I feel really sorry for the people who live close by as it must be a nightmare.

By the way Sickandtired… do you realize how aggressive, stupid and childish you sound... calling someone a whore and big man in reply to a newspaper report is pathetic and I'm sure many others readers probably think the same !!!!

Paul, what do you hope to get out of the proposed meeting? Sounds like another waste of tax payers money to me. The highly succesful event is going ahead bringing more business to the area for the next 3 years, for those who are affected by it I suggest they either attend it and let their hair down or book a nice weekend away to avoid the masses afterall they have plenty of notice this time.

Just what business is it bringing to the area though... the only people making money out of it are the organisers. People buy their tickets, travel here, pay for their tents etc, spend their money INSIDE the event... then go home when it's all over. Warrington as a whole or the local businesses get nothing from it really.

Direwire, the meeting has already taken place and the licence was granted for 3 years. During the representation period that Halton Borough Council allows, a substantial number of residents in the Hatton, Stretton & Walton Ward that I represent asked me to seek reassurances that if the licence was granted for 3 years then, if there were material breaches of the 4 licensing objectives or conditions attached to the licence, then the licence would be reviewed. That is what I did for the residents, as their elected representative, and I have been able to reassure them that should material breaches occur then the Licence would be subject to review.

sickandtireds personal attack on Councillor Kennedy is totally out of order. He is simply trying to do the job he was elected to do by getting answers for those he represents. Perhaps if all the councillors did the same the town would be a better place!
Creamfields does cause problems for those living on that side of town and as Warrington residents they have they same right to expect support from the council as those of us living further elsewhere in the Borough. I agree that most money is generated inside the festival but it just put some extra money into Warrington economy and outs us firmly on the map.

Direwire, to discuss sickandtired's understanding of the Warrington Guardian article and the context of my comments. With regards to waste of taxpayers money, such a meeting would not involve any cost to the taxpayer.

Oh look, there's a general election vote coming up soon which means doing and saying anything to grab some more votes from your constituents. Don't pretend that this moral cause of yours is anything more.

As for a meeting, I wouldn't waste my time with someone who is associated with such a morally corrupt and bankrupt political system. We're lied to on a daily basis by our country's 'leaders', what makes you any different??
