Fury as killer Billy Jones escapes charge over drug smuggling

THE dad of murder victim Michael Theaker said his son’s killer has ‘beaten the prison system again’.

Mike Theaker, aged 49, slammed the Ministry of Justice after learning that Billy Jones received no punishment despite getting his mum Christine Jones to smuggle cannabis in to him at Moorland Prison, Doncaster, where he is serving a 10-and-a-half-year sentence for murder.

Mike, an Eddie Stobart fork lift truck employee, from Orford, said: “There is just no deterrent for people to stop committing crimes. If I was to go out and buy some drugs and the police observed me doing it, I would be charged. Why doesn’t it work while people are in prison?

“He has beaten the system and will carry on beating the system.”

Christine Jones, aged 47, of Mendip Avenue, was jailed for 10 months in February after a jury threw out claims that her son was being bullied and needed to give the drugs to other inmates to avoid an attack.

Billy, aged 20, along with brothers Colin and David Algie killed 22-year-old Michael in January 2006.

Mr Theaker said: “He obviously isn’t learning from his time inside. He is bad through and through.

“It makes me angry, he has got away with it even behind bars. What chance do we have when he comes out?”

Mike said he and his wife Jackie and children Craig and Zoey would have liked to see Jones prosecuted and sentenced for the latest crime.

He called for prisoners to stop being ‘pampered’.

He said: “Unfortunately Billy Jones is part of our life whether we like it or not.

“It is something we have to live with and work around. We don’t discuss him but when things come to light we obviously think he hasn’t learned his lesson.

“No matter what I say or how many people try to get the law changed, you just get fobbed off.

“How many more people will have to go through what me and Jackie have been through?”

Michael’s daughter Ellie-May who was born six weeks after her dad died will celebrate her fourth birthday this Sunday.

The Ministry of Justice declined to comment.
