Health trust gets gold standard for disabled care

THE 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised for its work in helping disabled service users.

The Gold Disability Standard award, given by the Employers’ Forum on Disability (EDF), shows where organisations are with regards to disability, where they need to be and how to get there in line with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

In 2009 106 organisations demonstrated their commitment to becoming ‘disability confident’ – meaning that they understand how it affects all aspects of their business, can create a culture of inclusion and make adjustments that enable individuals to contribute as employees, customers and partners.

The trust achieved a score of 81 per cent and was ranked 16th overall on a list of companies including BT, the BBC, the Home Office, universities, police forces and local authorities. It emerged third place in the NHS trust sector.

Dave Thompson, the trust’s assistant director of inclusion and partnerships, said: “EDF found that, in terms of employment and disability, the trust excels in supporting staff and service user involvement.

“We deliver our specialist mental health and learning disability services via a workforce that is made up of many talented individuals with a large diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, styles and characteristics including many disabled people.”
