Clr Yvonne Fovargue selection for Labour in Makerfield


A WARRINGTON councillor has been selected from an all woman shortlist to contest the 2010 general election in Makerfield Clr Yvonne Fovargue, who has represented Fairfield and Howley since 2004, was chosen from a list of six women to represent the Wigan constituency by Labour Party members.

The seat is currently held by Ian McCartney MP, a former cabinet minister and chair of the Labour Party, who announced his intention not to seek re-election in early 2009.

Clr Fovargue, who lives in Warrington with husband Clr Paul Kenny, is currently the chief executive of St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau and is a member of union Unite and the Co-operative Party.

She said: "I am delighted to have been selected – it’s a huge honour and privilege, but now the hard work really starts to make sure that we retain the seat for Labour in the general election.”

Clr Nigel Ash, secretary of Makerfield Labour Party said: “Yvonne has been chosen from an exceptional shortlist of candidates and we have every confidence that she will be an effective advocate for people both here in the constituency and in Westminster.”
