Pathology lab scientists reveal their work


IT is the department that keeps the hospital working and last week the pathology labs at Warrington Hospital were the centre of attention for national pathology week.

Its histopathologists, medical microbiologists, haematologists and other scientists took to the main reception of the Lovely Lane hospital to promote their work and raise awareness of heart disease, this year’s theme.

As well as histopathology, medical microbiology and haemotology, scientists in the work on chemical biochemistry and immunology, running a series of tests to help doctors diagnose patients.

While some, for example, searching for proteins produced after a heart attack, can be diagnosed within minutes, others, like some sexually transmitted infections, can take weeks of work as samples need time to grow.
